IIE DIGITAL DESK : May 16, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory indicating the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in nine districts of West Bengal over the coming days. This development offers a potential respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions in the region.
The districts expected to experience these weather conditions include Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Howrah. The IMD's forecast suggests that these areas may witness varying intensities of rainfall, with some districts potentially experiencing gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h.
The anticipated rainfall is attributed to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, which is expected to develop into a low-pressure area between May 16 and 22. This system may further intensify, potentially impacting the coastal regions of West Bengal.
In addition to the rainfall, the IMD has highlighted the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in the aforementioned districts. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when such weather events are more likely to occur
The current weather conditions in Kolkata reflect the broader regional pattern. The city is experiencing high temperatures, with forecasts indicating a high of 36°C (97°F) and a low of 28°C (82°F) on May 16. Similar conditions are expected to persist over the weekend, with a slight chance of thunderstorms on May 18.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather patterns and will provide updates as necessary. Residents in the affected districts are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety guidelines during adverse weather conditions.
