IIE Digital Desk: On Thursday morning, a 61-year-old man was reportedly killed by his brother in the Balurghat area of South Dinajpur as he was involved in 'a long-running family dispute over nearly two bighas of land.

During his journey to plant paddy seeds on the controversial plot, Bipul Sarkar, who was killed in an attack in Debipur-Bilpara, is said to have been responsible. He was reportedly attacked by his brother, Dilip Kumar Sarkar, with a bamboo stick, leading to his collapse at the scene, according to the police.

Balurghat police arrived at the scene and transported Bipul's body to Balurigh district hospital for post-mortem examination. Following that moment, the police took Dilip into custody from Rampur.

Among the evidence, investigators found a bamboo stick stained with blood in an adjacent jute field. The object is believed to have been used in the alleged attack.

The family of the victim reported that it had been a long-standing argument. The brothers' mother passed away about four years ago.. Bipul's family claimed that she had been residing with them prior to her demise and had given nearly two bighas of land registered under her name to Gopal, their son. The land ownership became a source of conflict between the two brothers, which ultimately resulted in judicial proceedings.

On Thursday morning, Bipul was reportedly on his way to the contentious land to cultivate paddy when the altercation occurred. Pratima, his spouse, contended that the land dispute was responsible for her husband's demise.

The accused has been apprehended, as confirmed by South Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta. Investigation: Police continue to investigate the death.

It is a reminder that long-standing disputes over property and inheritance can lead to violent confrontations, even between families. The authorities are investigating the evidence from the scene and questioning those involved in the conflict.
