IIE Digital Desk : The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) declared the Higher Secondary (HS) Examination 2025 results today, bringing an end to weeks of anxious anticipation for over 8 lakh students across the state. The announcement was made at a press conference held by WBCHSE President Dr. Chiranjib Bhattacharya, who congratulated the students for their performance in what he described as “an exceptionally competitive year.”

This year’s topper is Anwesha Sen from Bankura Zilla School, who scored a remarkable 498 out of 500 marks, securing the first position statewide. She is followed closely by Ritvik Das from a private school in North 24 Parganas with 496 marks, and Rupa Mondal from Malda, who scored 495. The top 10 list includes students from both urban and rural schools, a sign, according to officials, that academic excellence is becoming more widespread across the state.

The overall pass percentage for 2025 stands at 90.7%, showing a slight increase from last year’s 89.3%. Female students outperformed male students yet again, with a pass percentage of 92.4% compared to 88.1% among boys. Humanities recorded the highest pass percentage, followed by Science and then Commerce.

Dr. Bhattacharya also noted that several students secured full marks in subjects like Mathematics, Political Science, and Computer Science — an indication of the growing emphasis on STEM and liberal arts education. “It’s encouraging to see that both traditional and modern streams are yielding excellent results,” he said.

This year, the evaluation process was completed within a record time of 45 days, and for the first time, students were able to access their marksheets digitally within minutes of the results being declared. The board partnered with multiple websites and a mobile app to ensure smooth and widespread access, minimizing the need for students to queue up at schools for physical copies.

While Kolkata, as usual, contributed a significant number of students to the merit list, notable performances came from districts like Bankura, Purulia, Cooch Behar, and Birbhum, indicating a balanced educational development across regions. In fact, out of the top 20 rank holders, 12 were from districts outside Kolkata.

Students who scored high marks attributed their success to a mix of disciplined preparation, online coaching, and school support. Topper Anwesha Sen, who aspires to pursue Physics at IISc Bangalore, credited her teachers and her daily 10-hour study routine for her result. “I stayed away from social media, focused on textbooks, and revised repeatedly,” she said, visibly emotional during the press interaction.

The HS results also set the stage for a tight competition for undergraduate admissions this year. Most top colleges in Kolkata and other parts of the state are expected to see a high cut-off, especially in Science and Commerce streams.

WBCHSE has also announced that students who wish to apply for rechecking or scrutiny can do so starting from May 10 through the official website. The board plans to release physical copies of the mark sheets and certificates to schools by May 12.

Education Minister Bratya Basu extended his congratulations to students, teachers, and parents across West Bengal and stated that the government is committed to improving higher secondary education infrastructure even further. “This year’s results reflect the resilience and potential of Bengal’s youth,” he remarked.
