IIE DIGITAL DESK : Winter is making an early arrival in the region, various western districts of West Bengal have begun experiencing a noticeable drop in temperatures. According to the Alipore Weather Office, the minimum temperatures in several of these districts have fallen below 15 °C, driven by the onset of cold northwesterly winds and a weakening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
The forecast indicates that this chilly spell is likely to linger through at least the end of the week. The report suggests that over the next four to five days, temperatures will remain relatively stable with little significant variation expected.
Kolkata, the minimum temperature has dropped to around 18 °C — a few degrees below typical levels for this time of year. Early morning hours have been particularly cold, and fog has become common in the coastal and adjacent districts, adding to the chill.
The weather dynamics are being attributed to the gradual weakening of a low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal, which has allowed cold winds to invade the western districts of the state, thereby reducing daytime heating and lowering night-time minima.
Residents are already feeling the difference — the familiar crispness of a winter dawn has set in, especially in districts such as Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Koch Bihar and Kalimpong where dense morning fog has become frequent. The forecast suggests that rainfall is unlikely in the immediate term, with dry weather conditions prevailing across the region.
With the temperature slide now underway, people are being advised to adapt accordingly — wearing warmer clothing early in the morning and late at night, closing windows when the temperature drops, and being extra cautious for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions who may be more affected by the cool mornings and evenings.
The early drop in temperatures across West Bengal signals an advance wave of winter. While the absolute lows are modest compared to deep winter levels, the shift is significant for this time of year and indicates that colder days are at our doorstep.
