Beyond Forests and Hills: Purulia’s Sewati Hills Add a New Charm to Bengal Tourism

Hidden Beauty of Purulia
Hidden Beauty of Purulia

IIE DIGITAL: Amid the green landscapes of Purulia lies a hidden natural treasure waiting to be explored. The Sewati Hills, with their rolling hill ranges, dense forests, sparkling streams and rich wildlife, could soon become a new destination for nature-based tourism in Bengal.

Spread across the forest areas near the Jharkhand border, Sewati Hills offer a rare combination of scenic beauty and biodiversity. The region is covered with thick greenery, where waterfalls flow through the forests and the sounds of birds fill the air during the day. As evening arrives, the calls of wild animals echo through the woods, reflecting the untouched character of this natural habitat.

The forests are home to several wild species, including elephants, leopards and bears, making the area highly significant from an ecological perspective. The possibility of developing this forest landscape as an eco tourism destination has gained momentum following a recent visit by Purulia MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato along with senior district administration officials and forest department representatives.

During the inspection, officials visited the Sewati Hills area under the Kalma Beat of Jhalda forest range as well as the Kariyar forest region under the Simni Beat of Kotshila forest range. The forest department highlighted the environmental importance of these areas and their rich natural resources.

One of the unique features of Sewati Hills is the absence of large human settlements. Apart from a few Birhor tribal families living nearby, the region remains largely untouched, preserving its natural beauty and wildlife.

The charm of the hills increases during the monsoon season when the entire landscape transforms into a lush green paradise. Though photographers and a few tourists already visit the area, there has been no organised plan to develop tourism while protecting the fragile ecosystem.

Now, with renewed attention from the administration, discussions have started around creating a sustainable eco tourism model that can promote tourism without disturbing the forest environment.

If developed carefully, Sewati Hills could emerge as one of Bengal’s most attractive offbeat destinations, offering visitors a unique experience of forests, hills, waterfalls and wildlife.
