NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar Visits Murshidabad to Support Women Affected by Communal Violence

IIE DIGITAL DESK :  The recent communal violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, accompanied by NCW member Archana Majumdar, visited the riot-affected areas to assess the situation and offer support to the victims. The violence, which occurred on April 11 and 12, led to the tragic loss of three lives and displaced hundreds of families, many of whom sought refuge in neighboring districts.

The NCW delegation visited the Mandirpara area of Dhulian and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad, where reports of molestation and other atrocities against women during the unrest had emerged. Rahatkar expressed deep concern over the incidents, stating that the commission had taken suo motu cognizance of the violence and constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and dignity of women, especially in the aftermath of such traumatic events.

During their visit, Rahatkar and Majumdar interacted with the affected women, listening to their harrowing accounts of the violence they endured. Many women recounted stories of losing their husbands and sons, while others described being forcibly dragged from their homes and subjected to brutal violence. The NCW team assured the victims that the commission would take all necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.

The NCW delegation also met with local authorities, including the district magistrate and superintendent of police, to discuss the situation and coordinate efforts to provide assistance to the affected individuals. Rahatkar emphasized the need for immediate relief measures, including medical aid, legal assistance, and rehabilitation support for the victims.

In addition to providing immediate relief, the NCW has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and the implementation of long-term measures to prevent such violence in the future. The commission has also urged the state government to strengthen law enforcement in sensitive areas and ensure that perpetrators of violence are held accountable.

The NCW's intervention highlights the critical importance of addressing gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and dignity of women, especially in the aftermath of communal unrest. The commission's commitment to investigating the incidents and advocating for justice underscores its role in upholding women's rights and holding perpetrators accountable.

As the investigation continues, the NCW has pledged to provide ongoing support to the victims and work towards creating a safer environment for women in Murshidabad and other vulnerable regions. The commission's efforts serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect the rights and well-being of women across the country.
