IIE DIGITAL DESK : New Delhi, May 9, 2025 — As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport continues to operate normally, even as 27 airports across northern and western India remain closed due to security concerns.
The closures come in the wake of recent military escalations, including India's airstrikes on alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and subsequent retaliatory attacks by Pakistan on Indian military installations. These developments have led to heightened security measures, including the suspension of civilian flights in affected areas.
According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the 27 closed airports are primarily located in regions close to the India-Pakistan border. The Indian Air Force has taken control of several of these airports, including Srinagar, to manage the security situation. Major airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have canceled or rerouted numerous flights, while international carriers like Lufthansa and Air France have adjusted their routes to avoid Pakistani airspace.
Despite the regional disruptions, Delhi's IGI Airport has managed to maintain operations. Airport authorities have implemented enhanced security protocols and are coordinating closely with airlines to manage passenger flow and minimize delays. Travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight information.
The ongoing conflict has also affected other aspects of daily life. Educational institutions in affected regions have been closed, and public events, including sports matches, have been postponed or relocated. The Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, originally scheduled in Dharamsala, has been moved to Ahmedabad due to the closure of nearby airports.
International communities have expressed concern over the escalating situation. The United States has urged both nations to exercise restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to de-escalate tensions. Meanwhile, the United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.
As the situation remains fluid, passengers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and exercise patience during this period of uncertainty.
