IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 5: The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) as senior party MP Kalyan Banerjee is reportedly preparing for a legal battle over the appointment of Rithabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. The move has triggered a new challenge for the party’s internal unity and is being closely watched by top leadership at Kalighat.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggest that a legal petition may be filed in court against the Speaker’s decision, but only after receiving her final approval. At present, the leadership is waiting for an official statement from the Assembly before taking any formal legal step. The issue has quietly intensified discussions within party circles, with strategic consultations underway.
The Speaker’s explanation, the decision regarding the appointment was taken strictly in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions. The Speaker stated that the first application contained technical errors, which led to its rejection, and the subsequent decision was made following due procedure without deviation from the law.
This justification has not been accepted by Kalyan Banerjee, who is a close aide of Mamata Banerjee and a prominent TMC Lok Sabha MP. He has strongly opposed the decision, calling it completely illegal and asserting that the matter will be proven in court. His remarks have added further tension to the ongoing political debate.
Reports indicate that Kalyan Banerjee is actively preparing for a legal confrontation over what he has described as “party capture” or internal takeover attempts. However, the legal action is expected to be delayed until the party leadership gives a final nod. Until then, the situation remains under close observation by the top leadership at Kalighat.
Party insiders suggest that all major decisions will ultimately depend on the Chief Minister’s approval, and the political direction of the issue will become clearer once she takes a final call on whether to escalate the matter legally.
