IIE DIGITAL DESK : The high-profile case related to the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor and student at RG Kar Medical College has now been transferred to a special division bench of the Calcutta High Court after multiple benches earlier recused themselves citing lack of time.

The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak stepped away from hearing the matter, followed by another bench led by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, which also withdrew for similar reasons. In view of these developments, Chief Justice Sujay Paul has now assigned the case to a special division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.

The case pertains to allegations of rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which has sparked widespread public outrage and intense scrutiny across West Bengal. The earlier bench led by Justice Mantha had issued several directions, including permitting interrogation of the prime accused Sanjay Roy and, if necessary, other suspects. The bench had also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (Central Bureau of Investigation) to submit detailed reports in response to additional affidavits filed by the victim’s parents.

The CBI submitted its report in a sealed cover earlier this week. Soon after receiving the report, the bench opted to recuse itself from the case, citing the need for uninterrupted time for detailed hearings. Justice Mantha observed that the matter required urgent attention due to its sensitive nature and widespread concern among the public. He further suggested that the case should be heard by a bench with sufficient time for in-depth proceedings to ensure proper justice.

He also noted the possibility that the state government may consider forming a judicial commission to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, highlighting the seriousness of the case and the ongoing institutional response.

With the transfer to the special division bench, the case is expected to continue under closer judicial scrutiny, as legal proceedings move forward in one of the most closely watched criminal matters in the state.
