IIE DIGITAL DESK ; July 16, 2026 ; Tehran, Iran :  Children's cancer hospital in Iran was reportedly struck in a major air and drone attack that Iranian authorities have blamed on the United States, while a series of explosions across several Iranian port cities left at least seven people dead and more than one hundred injured. The developments have further intensified tensions in the Middle East amid the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

According to a report carried by an Iranian news outlet, the attack took place on Wednesday night when drones and missiles allegedly targeted the Shahid Baghaei Children's Cancer Hospital in Ahvaz. The hospital was reportedly treating numerous young cancer patients at the time of the attack. The incident triggered panic among hospital staff, patients and their families, leading to an emergency evacuation of the facility.

Reports said a significant section of the hospital building suffered extensive damage during the strike. Despite the destruction, Iranian media reported that no children or patients had been killed or injured in the attack, as medical personnel managed to evacuate those inside the hospital in time. The reported strike on a medical facility has drawn widespread attention because hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law.

The hospital attack coincided with a series of explosions that shook several Iranian coastal cities on Wednesday night. Explosions were reported from Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar, Konarak, Rask City and Khandab, creating widespread concern across southern Iran. Iranian authorities claimed that one of the country's military barracks was also damaged during the attacks.

Officials in Tehran stated that the explosions across the port cities resulted in the deaths of seven people, while the number of injured has reportedly crossed one hundred. Emergency services and security agencies were deployed across the affected areas as rescue and relief operations continued.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement acknowledging military operations in the region. According to the statement, Iranian military activities were once again disrupting maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and attempting to challenge restrictions imposed by the United States. CENTCOM said military facilities near the strategic waterway were targeted as part of the operation. The statement also claimed that U.S. forces destroyed an Iranian tanker during the mission.

Iran responded with a strong warning through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), declaring that it would not be intimidated by what it described as American aggression. Iranian officials warned that unless U.S. military actions cease immediately, Tehran could move to completely close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important global shipping routes.

Iran also warned that American military bases across the Middle East could become targets of retaliatory action if further attacks take place. The latest exchange of accusations and military action has significantly heightened fears of a broader regional conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz once again emerging as a potential flashpoint that could have major implications for global energy supplies and international maritime trade.

The claims made by both Iran and the United States have further escalated the diplomatic and military standoff, while the full extent of the damage and casualties continues to be assessed. Independent verification of several battlefield claims remains limited as the conflict develops.
