IIE Digital Desk: A Jewish settler has been charged by Israeli prosecutors with the murder of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank, marking a rare instance of settler violence against Palestinians.

Reckless manslaughter charges have been filed against settler Yinon Levi for the death of Hathaleen in July 2025, as stated in an indictment filed on Thursday in a district court in southern Israel. Levi is also accused of trespassing with weapons and vandalism. The maximum prison term for reckless manslaughter under Israeli law is 12 years respectively.

In the southern West Bank, Hathaleen was a prominent Palestinian community leader and activist. His involvement was documented in the Oscar-winning film No Other Land, which focused on Palestinians fighting to defend their homes and communities from displacement.

According to reports, Hathaleen was killed during a confrontation in the village of Umm al-Khair in July 2025. According to rights groups, Levi was captured on video footage opening fire during the incident. A chest injury caused by the gunshot resulted in Hathaleen's death at a hospital. Levi has refuted the accusations and argued that his actions were self-defense.

The case has garnered attention because there have been few indictments against Israelis for the killing of Palestinian over the years in the West Bank. B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization based in Tel Aviv, has reported that the indictment is the first one since October 7, 2023, when an Israel was accused of killing another Palestinian in the occupied area. Despite repeated complaints, rights groups claim that settler violence is not being held accountable.

While approving the indictment, Hathaleen's family and legal team stressed that it cannot bring back the activist. The development was described by Eitan Peleg, his family lawyer (right) as potentially significant in the fight against violent settlers.

The indictment is being filed amidst the ongoing international scrutiny of violence in the West Bank. Palestinian communities have repeatedly reported attacks, property damage, and displacement pressures, while human rights groups have documented an increase in settler attacks since the start of the Gaza war. 

The prosecution of Levi could serve as a crucial test in how the Israeli authorities will address allegations of violence by Palestinians against settlers.
