IIE DIGITAL DESK ;  June 25: Venezuela has been struck by a powerful series of earthquakes that left at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured, triggering widespread destruction and panic across the country. The strong tremors, which hit on Wednesday evening local time, caused several buildings and homes to collapse in the capital city of Caracas and surrounding regions, forcing thousands of residents to flee into the streets in fear.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), two major earthquakes struck the same region within just 39 seconds of each other. The first quake measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, while the second, even stronger tremor registered a magnitude of 7.5. The back-to-back earthquakes shook large parts of the country and were felt across neighboring regions, creating scenes of chaos and devastation.

Reported that rescue teams were immediately deployed to affected areas as emergency workers searched through collapsed buildings for survivors. Hospitals in Caracas and nearby cities were overwhelmed as hundreds of injured residents sought medical treatment. Officials warned that the casualty toll could rise further as rescue operations continue in heavily damaged districts.

Interim President Rodriguez confirmed that more than 20 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquakes struck. He stated that the second earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, making its impact particularly destructive. The epicenter of the stronger quake was located about 16 kilometers southwest of Morón, a city situated in the central part of the country.

The shallow depth and powerful magnitude of the earthquakes amplified the destruction, causing severe structural damage to residential buildings, offices, and public infrastructure. Several roads suffered cracks, while power outages and communication disruptions were reported from multiple regions. Emergency services remain on high alert amid fears that additional aftershocks could trigger further collapses in already weakened structures.

Witnesses described moments of terror as buildings shook violently and residents rushed out of apartments, offices, and shopping centers. Many families spent the night outdoors in open spaces, fearing additional tremors. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid damaged buildings and remain prepared for possible aftershocks.

Seismologists have warned that strong aftershocks often follow earthquakes of this magnitude, increasing the risk of further damage and injuries. Disaster response teams have been working around the clock to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to those affected by the catastrophe.

The tragedy has drawn international attention and messages of solidarity from leaders around the world. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the devastation in Venezuela through a message on X. He said that the people of India were deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the powerful earthquake and extended heartfelt condolences to the Venezuelan government and its citizens, particularly the families who lost their loved ones.

Prime Minister Modi also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster and assured that India stands with the people of Venezuela during this difficult period. He further stated that India is ready to provide all possible assistance if required to support relief and recovery efforts.

Venezuela grapples with one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years, rescue operations continue amid fears of further aftershocks. The nation now faces the enormous challenge of rebuilding damaged communities while caring for hundreds of injured survivors and thousands displaced by the catastrophe.
