IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Bijapur, October 14: The nine-day traditional ‘Bathukamma’ festival has begun under the initiative of the Andhra Samaj Committee in Bijapur, Karnataka. The celebrations are being held beside the Shiva temple at Jai Stambh Chowk, bringing together women and members of the community to celebrate their religious beliefs, cultural traditions and heritage. The festival, which has deep roots in Telangana’s traditional culture, is marked by colourful floral arrangements and the worship of Goddess Gauri.

As part of the celebrations, women associated with the Andhra Samaj Committee decorated an attractive pandal with a variety of colourful flowers, creating a festive atmosphere at the venue. Bathukamma is traditionally celebrated by arranging seasonal flowers in distinctive, tiered floral formations and offering prayers to Goddess Gauri. The festival reflects the close relationship between nature, religious devotion and community life in Telangana’s cultural traditions.

The celebration in Bijapur highlights the efforts of the local community to preserve and promote its cultural identity while living outside its traditional homeland. Through the nine-day festival, participants seek to pass on their customs and religious practices to younger generations, keeping their cultural heritage alive.

Several members of the Andhra Samaj Committee attended the programme, including P. Kavita, P. Devi, K. Sravanthi, Lakshmi Padala, P. Rani, D. Shyamala, Mamata Jaiswal, Deepti Padala, Chittapuri Sandhya, G. Vaishali, P. Shalini, G. Rajalakshmi, Anita Kondra, Ranjana Kondra and Sandhya Katla, along with other members of the organisation.

The gathering provided an opportunity for women in the community to come together, participate in traditional celebrations and strengthen their social and cultural bonds. The floral decorations and collective worship added to the festive spirit, while the participation of committee members reflected the community’s commitment to continuing the tradition.

Bathukamma holds special significance in Telangana, where women celebrate the festival by arranging flowers, singing traditional songs and offering prayers. The celebrations are closely associated with devotion to Goddess Gauri and the seasonal abundance of flowers. The festival also serves as an expression of women’s participation in preserving regional customs and passing them on through generations.

The observance in Bijapur demonstrates how traditional festivals continue to bring communities together across geographical boundaries. By organising the nine-day Bathukamma celebration, the Andhra Samaj Committee is helping preserve a distinctive cultural tradition in Karnataka while reinforcing the community’s connection with Telangana’s heritage.

The celebrations are expected to continue over the nine-day period, with members participating in the rituals and festivities in keeping with tradition. For the women and families involved, Bathukamma is not merely a religious occasion but also an opportunity to celebrate their shared identity, strengthen community ties and keep their cultural legacy alive.
