IIE Digital Desk: On Friday, the Bahuda Yatra, which marks the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lady Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhatri, began in Puri, Odisha's temple town, with extensive security measures in place. The procession, which marked the grand conclusion of Rath Yatra's annual celebration in New Delhi, attracted a large crowd that packed the historic Grand Road.

During the Rath Yatra, the deities return to their traditional residence at the Gundicha Temple, where they spent a week during the Bahuda Yatral festival. During the traditional Pahandi ceremony, the younger gods were ceremoniously brought to life on their high wooden chariots and paraded through the streets while being enthroned with devotional chants such as "Jai Jagannath.".

Elaborate security and crowd-management measures were implemented by the Odisha government to ensure that the festival ran smoothly, anticipating a large number of pilgrims. The city witnessed the deployment of thousands of police officers, surveillance cameras, traffic diversions, medical teams, and emergency response units. The Rath Yatra on July 16 saw a stampede-like event that resulted in two fatalities and several injuries, prompting officials to introduce enhanced crowd-monitoring systems. He urged the police, temple administration and disaster management agencies to work together under strict conditions so as not to overcrowd worshippers in an untidy environment.

The Mausi Maa Temple is renowned for its exceptional service during the Bahuda Yatra, where Lord Jagannath receives the Poda Pitha, acclaimed traditional baked food that is believed to be one of the deity's favourite offerings. Despite being founded on ancient traditions, the ritual remains popular among both religious groups.

Devote devotional songs, prayers, and chants filled the town with the sound of the rolling chariots passing through Puri's Grand Road. The Bahuda Yatra was once again a symbol of Odisha's vibrant cultural and spiritual life, with thousands of pilgrimagers arriving from all over India as well as other countries. The sacred visitation of the gods took place in a peaceful atmosphere, with strong security forces and countless devotees attending in an atmosphere of faith, celebration, and custom.
