October last year, the Union Home Ministry had appointed Pankaj Kumar Singh as a mediator to facilitate dialogue and help resolve the complex political situation in the hills. Acting in this capacity, Singh held his first formal meeting with Anit Thapa, President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) and Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
Political observers have described the meeting as highly significant, noting that it could mark a turning point in efforts to address the long-pending demands of the hill people. The residents of the region have consistently called for a permanent and clearly defined political solution to ensure stability, development, and effective governance in the hills.
Anit Thapa has repeatedly raised these concerns in various forums, emphasizing the need for a lasting resolution that reflects the aspirations of the people of the region. Wednesday’s meeting focused primarily on discussing a possible roadmap for achieving a durable and time-bound solution to the issues affecting the hills.
The meeting, Anit Thapa described the discussion as positive and constructive. He stated that the dialogue had opened up new possibilities for progress and expressed optimism that such initiatives could help bring long-awaited stability and development to the region. He also noted that the engagement signaled a renewed hope for overcoming the prolonged political deadlock in the hills.
Mediator Pankaj Kumar Singh, on the other hand, indicated that he intends to consult all relevant political stakeholders in order to arrive at an acceptable and inclusive solution. He reaffirmed his commitment to engaging with all parties involved in the issue to ensure that any future agreement reflects broad consensus.
The meeting has generated cautious optimism among political circles and local residents alike. Observers believe that if the dialogue process continues constructively, it may pave the way for meaningful progress in addressing the long-standing challenges faced by the Darjeeling hills and surrounding areas.
All eyes remain on the next steps of the mediation process and whether this renewed initiative will translate into tangible improvements in governance, development, and peace in the region.
