IIE DIGITAL DESK ; May 9: West Bengal’s new government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, political leader Humayun Kabir has reportedly indicated conditional support for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections, while also outlining his own party’s electoral strategy in select constituencies.
Humayun Kabir, founder of the Am Janata Unnayan Party, made these remarks while political activities intensified across the state following the formation of a BJP-led government. The event also saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata.
Kabir stated that his party would extend what he described as “unofficial support” to the BJP in most constituencies across West Bengal, except for six seats. He specifically mentioned that his party would contest in select constituencies, including three Lok Sabha seats in Murshidabad, two in Malda, and Raiganj.
Kabir, while his party would field candidates in these regions, he also expressed confidence in challenging the ruling Trinamool Congress All India Trinamool Congress in Murshidabad. He claimed that his party would aim to defeat the Trinamool Congress in three constituencies of the district and secure victories in key seats such as Baharampur and Jangipur.
Kabir also stated that he would contest from Baharampur and expressed confidence in ensuring victory for his party candidates in Jangipur and other targeted constituencies. He further added that his organisational strategy includes adjusting candidature arrangements, including potential by-elections in select seats.
The political leader, who earlier split from the Trinamool Congress to form the Am Janata Unnayan Party, had previously contested elections from Naoda and Rejinagar constituencies in Murshidabad and won. He noted that, as per electoral norms, he would need to vacate one of his seats and indicated plans to field his son in a possible by-election.
His latest remarks suggesting indirect support to the BJP while simultaneously challenging the Trinamool Congress in specific districts have added a new dimension to the evolving political landscape of West Bengal ahead of future national elections.
