IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Hooghly, June 11: Goghat’s Trinamool Congress Block President Soumen Digar was arrested on multiple serious charges, including extortion, assault, and illegal land grabbing, and was produced before the Arambagh Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday.
Digar was arrested late Wednesday night from his residence by officers of Goghat Police Station. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody for questioning before being presented in court as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The arrest, Soumen Digar has reportedly not been removed from his position as the Block President of Goghat 2 TMC unit, raising political discussions within local circles. Multiple cases, including non-bailable sections, have been registered against him in connection with the allegations.
The case involves serious accusations related to intimidation, extortion, physical assault, and illegal occupation of land. Investigators allege that the accused had been involved in creating an atmosphere of fear in the locality during his tenure, with residents reportedly facing threats and violence if they opposed him.
Local residents and complainants have further alleged that land belonging to ordinary citizens was forcibly occupied under pressure. The allegations suggest that individuals who resisted or spoke out were subjected to physical assault and intimidation.
Soumen Digar is known to be a close associate of Ramendu Singha Roy, the president of the Arambagh organizational district of the Trinamool Congress. His arrest has therefore drawn significant political attention in the region, with discussions intensifying over internal party dynamics and law enforcement actions.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been raising concerns over the alleged activities of the leader for a long time. Following his arrest, the BJP welcomed the move and described it as a necessary step toward maintaining law and order in the region.
Police officials have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further questioning of the accused may be conducted depending on court orders and procedural requirements. Authorities have not ruled out additional arrests or actions as the case develops.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding political influence in local administrative structures and allegations of misuse of power in rural areas of West Bengal.
