IIE DIGITAL DESK : Political development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress candidate for Chuchura, Debangshu Bhattacharya, visited veteran party leader and three-time MLA Asit Majumdar at his residence, amid rising speculation over internal dissatisfaction following the announcement of the party’s candidate list.

The visit came just a day after Asit Majumdar expressed strong disappointment over being denied a ticket despite his long-standing political career and three consecutive terms as MLA. The senior leader had also hinted at stepping away from active electoral politics, triggering concern within party ranks about potential unrest in the constituency.

Within 24 hours of the candidate announcement from Kalighat, Debangshu Bhattacharya—popularly known as a young and energetic face of the Trinamool Congress and often referred to as a “party soldier”—arrived at Majumdar’s Priyanagar residence in Chuchura. The meeting between the experienced leader and the newly announced candidate has since sparked widespread discussion in political circles about whether differences are being resolved behind the scenes.

The meeting was rooted in respect and political guidance. He stated that his association with Asit Majumdar is not new and described the visit as an invitation-based interaction. He emphasized that discussions naturally revolved around political strategy and campaign planning, including how to effectively reach voters and manage ground-level campaigning in Chuchura.

Debangshu highlighted that Asit Majumdar possesses unmatched knowledge of the constituency, stating that he knows Chuchura “like the palm of his hand.” He added that he sought detailed advice from the veteran leader on how to conduct the campaign effectively, how to approach voters, and how to strengthen the party’s presence on the ground. He further mentioned that he carefully noted Majumdar’s suggestions and intends to revisit him for further guidance if required, even carrying a notebook to document insights.

Beyond political strategy, Debangshu also described the meeting as a gesture of respect toward Majumdar’s long experience in politics. He said he had come to acknowledge the senior leader’s political wisdom and also appealed for his continued support in the upcoming election, signaling a desire to maintain unity within the party.

On the other hand, Asit Majumdar appeared to adopt a conciliatory tone during and after the meeting. He described Debangshu Bhattacharya as someone “like his own son,” drawing a personal comparison that softened the earlier tension surrounding his exclusion from the candidate list. While acknowledging his earlier disappointment, Majumdar reaffirmed his loyalty to the Trinamool Congress and expressed his wish to see Mamata Banerjee return as Chief Minister for a fourth term.

He also indicated his willingness to support the party’s candidate in the upcoming election, stating that he had been requested to stand by Debangshu and had agreed to do so. However, he maintained a degree of political ambiguity when asked whether he would actively campaign alongside the candidate, saying that time would reveal the extent of his involvement.

Majumdar further hinted at larger political developments unfolding in Chuchura and across the state, suggesting that “bigger political games” were yet to come, a remark that has fueled further speculation about the evolving electoral dynamics in the region.

Reports also suggest that prior to this meeting, Majumdar had engaged in discussions with senior party leadership, including Abhishek Banerjee, indicating that internal communication within the party may have contributed to easing tensions.

With the West Bengal Assembly elections approaching, the interaction between Debangshu Bhattacharya and Asit Majumdar is being closely watched as a potential turning point in Chuchura’s political narrative. What began as a moment of disappointment over ticket denial now appears to be shifting toward reconciliation, unity, and strategic realignment within the Trinamool Congress in a crucial electoral battleground.
