IIE DIGITAL DESK: Xiaomi has introduced a new battery upgrade programme in China for its Xiaomi 13 series smartphones, allowing users to replace existing batteries with higher-capacity units through official service channels, according to recent reports.

The programme covers the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi 13 Ultra models and is designed to extend the overall battery life of the devices by installing upgraded cells rather than standard replacements. The service is available through Xiaomi’s official repair and service system in China.

Part of the upgrade, each model receives a significant increase in battery capacity. The standard Xiaomi 13 sees its battery capacity rise from 4,500mAh to 4,850mAh. The Xiaomi 13 Pro is upgraded from 4,820mAh to 5,361mAh, while the Xiaomi 13 Ultra gets a boost from 5,000mAh to 5,500mAh, offering improved endurance for users.

The battery upgrade service is priced at approximately CNY 149, along with additional labour charges, and includes inspection, installation, system calibration, and testing.

Xiaomi has also noted that the new higher-capacity batteries may result in slightly longer charging times compared to the original units due to increased power storage. Users are advised to update their devices to the latest software version before opting for the replacement to ensure compatibility.

The company has made the service available through its official Xiaomi Mall platform in China, where eligible users can check device support and book the upgrade.

Industry observers say the initiative reflects Xiaomi’s effort to extend the lifespan of its flagship devices while offering users a cost-effective alternative to buying new smartphones. The programme is also seen as part of a broader trend in China’s smartphone market, where manufacturers are increasingly focusing on after-sales hardware upgrades and sustainability-driven service models.

While the service is currently limited to China, it has generated interest among global Xiaomi users who are hopeful that similar upgrade programmes may be expanded to other regions in the future.
