IIE Digital Desk: Apple has reinstated Telegram messaging platform in its App Store following a global breach of their child sexual abuse material policies. The service was previously removed from the App store. The app was unavailable for new downloads for several hours before it resolved the issue.

Apple stated that the temporary removal was prompted by an App Store review that found material to be in violation of its strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse of any kind. In response, Telegram promptly removed the offensive content and banned the responsible user, prompting Apple to reinstate the app on App Store. Existing Telegram users were not affected by the temporary ban.

In a news release, Telegram said it had been restored and would soon be open to all users. The disappearance of Telegram during an outage led to users searching for the app receiving a message that said, "the page cannot be found.". Similar to other issues with inappropriate content, Apple removed Telegram from the App Store for a short time in 2018. After that episode Telegram bolstered its moderation systems, adding new detection tools and expanding on the search for illegal content removed from platform.

The Telegram company has reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy towards child sexual abuse material, stating that it actively deletes such content and prohibits offending accounts. CSAM-affiliated groups and channels have been banned by the company in recent years, as part of its moderation efforts to maintain control.

App stores and regulators are increasingly scrutinizing digital platforms for content moderation, as evidenced by the brief takedown.
