IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Mumbai | June 24, 2026 : India’s financial capital Mumbai witnessed relentless rainfall throughout the night, leading to widespread waterlogging across several parts of the city and causing significant inconvenience for residents and commuters. Continuous heavy showers inundated roads, railway tracks, markets, and low-lying areas, prompting authorities to issue warnings and intensify monitoring efforts.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), persistent and intense rainfall since Tuesday night resulted in water accumulation in numerous localities across Mumbai. Several key areas reported flooding, disrupting normal movement and creating challenges for motorists and pedestrians during the morning hours.

One of the worst-affected locations was Dadar Hindu Colony, where substantial waterlogging was reported after hours of uninterrupted rain. Water also accumulated on railway tracks at Dadar Railway Station, raising concerns among commuters. However, railway officials confirmed that train services continued to operate and were not significantly affected despite the flooding on parts of the tracks.

The India Meteorological Department and local authorities have issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighboring districts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming hours. The alert covers Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg districts, where weather conditions are expected to remain unfavorable.

The impact of the overnight downpour extended beyond central Mumbai. In Navi Mumbai, the well-known Vashi Market was submerged after heavy rainwater flooded the area, affecting vendors and daily business activities. In the King Circle locality, water levels rose to knee height, making movement difficult for residents and commuters attempting to navigate the flooded streets.

Heavy rainfall also caused serious problems in Andheri, where a major underpass had to be temporarily closed after significant water accumulation made it unsafe for vehicles. Authorities moved quickly to prevent accidents and ensure public safety by restricting access to the flooded route.

BMC official Ritwik explained that municipal workers had been deployed at the underpass to prevent vehicles from entering the dangerous stretch. He noted that despite repeated warnings, some auto-rickshaw drivers continued trying to cross the flooded subway.

“Our staff remain stationed at the location to ensure that no vehicles attempt to pass through the waterlogged underpass. However, some auto-rickshaw drivers still try to cross despite the risk. One auto-rickshaw became stranded in the middle of the subway due to the high water level. The driver's life was potentially in danger, and two of our personnel helped him safely come out of the flooded area,” the official said.

Municipal teams remained on alert throughout the night and into the morning, working to clear waterlogged areas and monitor vulnerable locations. Emergency response teams have also been instructed to remain prepared as forecasts indicate the possibility of continued rainfall across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The monsoon intensifying across Maharashtra, authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain cautious in low-lying areas, and follow official weather advisories. The latest spell of heavy rain once again highlighted Mumbai’s recurring monsoon challenges, as the city grapples with flooding, traffic disruptions, and waterlogged infrastructure during periods of intense precipitation.
