IIE DIGITAL DESK ; New Delhi | June 23, 2026 : Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers, with President Droupadi Murmu formally accepting his resignation on Tuesday. The development marks the end of Kurian’s tenure in the Union government, where he held responsibilities related to minority affairs as well as the fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairy sectors.

The President’s Secretariat, President Droupadi Murmu accepted George Kurian’s resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The acceptance was carried out in accordance with Clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India, which governs the appointment and resignation of Union ministers.

The announcement was made through an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, confirming that the resignation has taken effect following the prescribed constitutional procedure. The move formally concludes Kurian’s association with the Union Cabinet after serving in key ministerial roles under the central government.

George Kurian had been serving as a Member of the Rajya Sabha representing the state of Madhya Pradesh. During his tenure in the government, he was entrusted with responsibilities in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. His role involved supporting policy implementation and development initiatives aimed at strengthening minority welfare and promoting growth in sectors linked to agriculture, livestock, and fisheries.

Officials noted that Kurian’s tenure as a Rajya Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh, along with his term as Union Minister of State, formally came to an end on June 21, 2026. Following the completion of his tenure, the resignation process was initiated and has now been formally approved by the President.

The acceptance of the resignation is being viewed as a routine constitutional and administrative development following the conclusion of his term in office. While no immediate announcement regarding a successor has been made, the central government is expected to take appropriate steps concerning the distribution of ministerial responsibilities in accordance with established procedures.

George Kurian has remained associated with public life and national politics for several years, contributing to organizational and governmental responsibilities at various levels. His tenure in the Union government included participation in policy matters concerning minority communities as well as sectors crucial to rural livelihoods and economic development.

President Droupadi Murmu formally approving the resignation, Kurian’s ministerial responsibilities have officially concluded, bringing an end to his current chapter in the Union government. The development has been noted within political circles as part of the ongoing administrative and constitutional processes that accompany changes in ministerial assignments and parliamentary tenures in India.
