Kolkata, May 23: Residents across South Bengal continue to suffer under oppressive heat and humidity, with even intermittent rainfall failing to provide any significant relief from the uncomfortable weather conditions. Several districts, especially Bankura and Purulia, are experiencing intense heat, leaving people exhausted and struggling to cope with the persistent rise in discomfort levels.

The India Meteorological Department, there is currently no major possibility of any immediate change in the weather pattern across South Bengal. Officials stated that while temperatures are hovering close to normal seasonal levels, the high moisture content in the air has sharply increased humidity, making conditions feel far more unbearable for residents throughout the region.

The weather office further said that widespread thunderstorms and rainfall are likely to begin across large parts of South Bengal from next week onward. Kolkata is also expected to receive rain during this period. Along with rainfall, strong and gusty winds have been forecast in several southern districts of the state, which may finally bring some relief from the prolonged heatwave-like conditions.

Meteorologists indicated that the arrival of rain and storm activity could cause temperatures to dip slightly, although people will have to wait a few more days before experiencing any noticeable improvement. The department clarified that there is unlikely to be any major fluctuation in temperatures across South Bengal during the next five days. However, after the onset of thunderstorms and rain, mercury levels may fall by around two to three degrees Celsius over the following two days.

Kolkata, the minimum temperature recorded on Saturday morning stood at 29.8 degrees Celsius, which is 2.9 degrees above the seasonal normal. The combination of high temperature and excessive humidity has significantly worsened discomfort levels in the city, with many residents complaining of sleepless nights and exhausting daytime conditions.

The continuing spell of humid weather has also affected daily life in several districts, as people remain dependent on occasional rain and cloud cover for temporary respite. Weather officials are now closely monitoring atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal, which are expected to influence the upcoming spell of rain and thunderstorms across the state.
