IIE DIGITAL DESK : The dawn on July 4, 2025, Kolkata Police conducted an intensive crime scene reconstruction at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, retracing the horrifying events of the alleged gang rape that occurred late on June 25. The exercise, involving the four key accused—including former student and TMC Youth leader Monojit Mishra, two current students, and a security guard—spanned more than four hours and was meticulously documented using video and 3D mapping to align statements with evidence.

Arriving at around 4 am, a police convoy escorted the accused to the campus's union room, guard room, and surrounding areas, where investigators recreated the sequence of actions as alleged by the survivor. This marked a pivotal moment in the investigation, enabling authorities to compare the victim's description of the ordeal—allegedly between 7:30 pm to 10:50 pm—with the accused’s versions and available forensic data .

The survivor, a first-year student, reported that Monojit Mishra entered the union room after she had filled out an exam form, then forced her into the guard room where two accomplices—Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed—stood guard. A security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was allegedly coerced into leaving the post, rendering the victim helpless while she was threatened, beaten with a hockey stick, filmed, raped, and blackmailed.

Following the reconstruction, all four accused were returned to custody. Banerjee is expected to be produced in court once his police remand expires later on Friday.

This reconstruction is a vital investigative tool: it helps reveal discrepancies in testimonies, confirms the logistics of the crime, and clarifies the roles played by each suspect, including whether the guard aided or merely failed to act . The footage and 3D scans will now be matched against CCTV, medical, forensic, and digital evidence, strengthening the prosecution's case.

The accused remain in custody: Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukherjee (20), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pinaki Banerjee (55), with the principal three held until at least July 8. New charges—abduction with intent to cause grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, and wrongful confinement—have been appended to the initial gang rape FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Kolkata Police detective department has now taken over from the initial SIT, enlarging the investigative scope. The expanded team is meticulously examining call records, CCTV footage spanning 3:30 pm to 10:50 pm, victim statements, and the seized mobile video evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.

While the Delhi National Commission for Women and several student and political groups have called for strict action and a transparent probe, the police have also warned against attempts to reveal the survivor’s identity, citing legal consequences .

This reconstruction and enhanced investigation come amid intense public interest and political pressure. With demands from opposition parties for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and renewed scrutiny over campus safety in educational institutions, authorities emphasize their commitment to both swift justice and preserving the fairness of the judicial process .

The early-morning crime scene recreation at South Calcutta Law College marks a decisive escalation in the investigation. By retracing every moment of the alleged assault and comparing narratives with forensic evidence, Kolkata Police aim to build an airtight case against the four accused. With extended custody, enhanced charges, and new witnesses, the investigation is entering a critical phase where clarity, accountability, and justice will be measured under intense public scrutiny.
