IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, July 30, 2025 — President Droupadi Murmu set to embark on a two-day visit to West Bengal on July 30 and 31, city authorities have issued strict traffic advisories and sealed key routes to ensure seamless movement and heightened security.

According to a special advisory issued by the Kolkata Traffic Police, several arterial roads in central Kolkata will be temporarily closed or face strict vehicular restrictions to facilitate official movements and safeguard the President’s itinerary. The measures are expected to impact both motorists and commuters across central and southern parts of the city during her stay. 

President Murmu is scheduled to arrive at the Kolkata Airport before proceeding to AIIMS Kalyani in Nadia district via a dedicated IAF MI‑17 helicopter, followed by a puja ceremony at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple later in the afternoon. Security protocols around the Dakshineswar area have been significantly reinforced. 

The Kolkata Police have already prepared alternative routes to keep traffic moving, advising citizens to avoid major junctions during the two days. Residents and regular commuters are urged to plan journeys in advance and make use of the suggested bypass roads. 

The Calcutta High Court had directed traffic authorities to maintain road accessibility between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on July 21, to ensure smooth commuting for office-goers. Though that order applied to the Shahid Diwas rally, it signals the judiciary’s emphasis on prioritising mobility during significant civic events. 

Key restrictions during the Presidential visit include:Closure of selected central streets during designated hours, especially around Raj Bhavan and processional routes. Long-haul and goods vehicles barred from entering congested zones to minimise gridlock. Temporary suspension of roadside parking at sensitive locations including Victoria Memorial surroundings. Deployment of additional traffic wardens, barricades, and mobile diversions to manage crowd flow and vehicular movement. Emergency hotlines provided to the public for assistance and guidance. 

In addition to routine traffic management, heightened security arrangements accompany the visit. The Dakshineswar Temple and surrounding locality have been secured through perimeter controls, with temporary screening zones set up around the venue. 

City leadership emphasises that while the restrictions may inconvenience travelers, these measures are crucial for ensuring a secure and dignified visit. Authorities reiterate that civic offices and commercial establishments in the vicinity may experience delays or altered transport flows.

Given the protocol surrounding a head of state's visit, the city is effectively under a security bubble for the two-day duration. Residents are advised to make travel plans accordingly, heed official announcements, and cooperate with traffic and security personnel on the ground.

As President Murmu’s schedule unfolds—spanning convocation ceremonies, religious observances, and protocol visits—the city will recalibrate its mobility options. Commuters should avoid central zones during peak hours and remain updated via official traffic police advisories to navigate around restrictions effectively.

While the presidential visit is brief, the temporary traffic restrictions reflect Kolkata's approach to balancing civic life with national-level events and public safety priorities.
