IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Chennai, May 8 : Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape witnessed intense uncertainty on Friday as speculation grew over possible alliance realignments, including a potential understanding between long-time rivals DMK and AIADMK, following a fractured mandate in the state Assembly elections.
Despite emerging as the single largest party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay has been unable to secure the required majority to form the government. His bid to stake claim to power has been rejected twice by the Governor, citing insufficient numerical support in the House.
Vijay had earlier approached the Governor with support letters from 112 legislators, but was informed that at least 118 signatures of elected representatives were required to proceed with government formation. He made a second attempt on Thursday, but the demand for additional proof of majority was reiterated.
Protests erupted outside Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Friday, where Congress and TVK supporters demonstrated, demanding that Vijay be invited to form the government as the leader of the largest party in the Assembly. The protests reflected growing frustration over the evolving political uncertainty in the state.
Reports also suggest that Vijay has visited his party office in Chennai, although it remains unclear whether he will make another attempt to meet the Governor. His next political move is being closely watched as negotiations and counter-negotiations continue behind the scenes.
Speculation has intensified around a possible political realignment involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), both traditional rivals in Tamil Nadu politics. If such an alliance materialises, it could significantly alter the current balance of power and further complicate TVK’s path to forming a government.
DMK leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reportedly asked his party legislators to evaluate all political proposals carefully. Sources indicate that he has been authorised by the party leadership to take appropriate decisions depending on emerging developments.
The possibility of DMK-AIADMK cooperation has sparked strong political reactions, with critics suggesting that such a move could reshape Tamil Nadu’s electoral dynamics. Some reports also suggest that AIADMK’s exit from the NDA alliance could be a precondition for any potential understanding with DMK.
DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan, however, publicly dismissed the speculation, stating that an alliance between DMK and AIADMK is highly unlikely given their long-standing rivalry in Tamil Nadu politics.
Congress leaders, meanwhile, have alleged that the current political instability in the state is being influenced by the BJP at the national level, accusing the ruling party of engineering strategic disruptions. They also claimed that DMK has compromised its political stance under external pressure, further escalating the war of words among parties.
With multiple political equations still in flux, Tamil Nadu’s government formation process remains uncertain, and all major stakeholders appear to be engaged in high-level negotiations as the state awaits a clear path forward.
