IIE DIGITAL DESK :  Alcohol consumption among women in India has traditionally been a subject of cultural conservatism and social stigma. However, recent data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), conducted between 2019 and 2021, reveals a significant shift in this trend. Several states, particularly those with strong tribal traditions and urban influences, have reported higher percentages of female alcohol consumption, challenging long-standing stereotypes.

Arunachal Pradesh leads the nation with 24.2% of women consuming alcohol. This northeastern state has a rich tradition where alcohol, especially local rice beer, is an integral part of social and cultural rituals. Such practices have normalized alcohol consumption among women, making it a common feature in gatherings and ceremonies. 

Sikkim follows with 16.2% of women drinking alcohol. The state's indigenous beverage, Chhaang—a fermented millet beer—is deeply embedded in daily life and cultural events. This widespread consumption among women reflects the state's acceptance and integration of alcohol in social practices. 

Assam reports that 7.3% of women consume alcohol. Tribal communities in Assam have a long-standing tradition of brewing and consuming alcohol, often during festivals and community events. This cultural heritage contributes to the higher percentage of female alcohol consumption in the state. 

Telangana has 6.7% of women reporting alcohol consumption. In both urban and rural areas, drinking has become more socially acceptable among women, influenced by changing lifestyles and global trends. This shift is particularly noticeable in metropolitan regions where women's participation in social drinking is increasingly common. 

Jharkhand shows that 6.1% of women consume alcohol. Similar to Assam, tribal traditions in Jharkhand play a significant role in normalizing alcohol consumption among women. Community events and rituals often include alcohol, reflecting its cultural significance. 

Andaman and Nicobar Islands report 5% female alcohol consumption. As a Union Territory with diverse communities, including tribal populations, alcohol consumption among women is influenced by both indigenous practices and the liberal urban lifestyle. This blend of traditions contributes to the relatively higher consumption rates. 

Chhattisgarh has 5% of women consuming alcohol. In this state, cultural practices and social norms in certain communities have led to a more relaxed attitude towards female alcohol consumption. While not as prevalent as in some other states, the trend is gradually increasing. 

These statistics highlight a significant cultural and social shift in India, where traditional norms are evolving, and women are increasingly participating in activities once considered taboo. The rise in female alcohol consumption is influenced by various factors, including urbanization, changing gender roles, and the influence of global lifestyles. However, it's essential to approach this trend with sensitivity, recognizing the complex interplay of cultural, social, and individual factors that contribute to these changes.
