IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata | June 23, 2026 : The southwest monsoon has officially entered West Bengal, South Bengal is still waiting for the kind of widespread heavy rainfall that is typically associated with the season. In contrast, several districts in North Bengal continue to experience relentless rain, leading to disruptions in daily life and raising concerns over flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

The regional meteorological centre at Alipore, there is little likelihood of heavy rainfall in South Bengal over the next few days. Instead, most districts across the southern part of the state are expected to receive light to moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds. Weather officials believe that while temperatures may not witness any significant fluctuations, overall conditions are likely to remain relatively pleasant due to the cloud cover and intermittent rainfall.

The weather office reported that Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27.0 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, which is 0.2 degrees above the seasonal average. Humidity levels remain high, but the occasional rain and overcast skies are expected to prevent any sharp rise in temperature.

The formal arrival of the monsoon, South Bengal continues to face a noticeable rainfall deficit. Many areas have received far less precipitation than expected for this stage of the season, prompting concerns among farmers and residents who rely heavily on monsoon rains. Meteorologists, however, indicate that scattered showers are likely to occur across various districts, helping to gradually improve rainfall figures over the coming days.

The situation is markedly different in North Bengal, where continuous rainfall has dominated weather conditions for several days. The region has been drenched by persistent monsoon activity, and forecasts suggest that the wet spell is far from over. The Alipore Meteorological Department has warned that five districts in North Bengal are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next seven days.

The prolonged downpour has already affected normal life in several northern districts, with swollen rivers, waterlogged roads, and concerns about landslides in hilly areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and remain prepared to respond to any weather-related emergencies should conditions worsen.

Meteorologists have indicated that there is little sign of any major change in the weather pattern during the coming week. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to continue feeding rain-bearing systems over North Bengal, sustaining the ongoing spell of heavy precipitation. Meanwhile, South Bengal will remain under the influence of weaker monsoon activity, resulting in comparatively lower rainfall totals.

Residents across South Bengal can expect periodic showers and cloudy skies in the days ahead, while those in North Bengal should prepare for continued heavy rainfall and possible disruptions. The contrasting weather patterns between the northern and southern parts of the state once again highlight the uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall across West Bengal, even after the season’s official onset.

The monsoon now firmly established over the state, weather experts will continue to monitor developments closely, particularly in North Bengal, where the risk of rain-related complications remains elevated. For now, scattered showers are likely to define the weather in the south, while the north braces for another week of intense monsoon rain.
