IIE DIGITAL DESK  : On Monday, a protest by opposition MPs in Delhi escalated into a confrontation with the Delhi Police, resulting in injuries and fainting among Trinamool Congress (TMC) members. The demonstration, led by TMC MPs and other members of the INDIA alliance, was organized to oppose the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list at the Election Commission's Nirvachan Sadan headquarters. 

During the protest, TMC MP Mitali Bag sustained injuries and was subsequently hospitalized. Another TMC MP, Mahua Moitra, fainted inside a police van during detention. The opposition MPs accused the Delhi Police, operating under the Union Home Ministry, of manhandling them, particularly the women MPs, and misleading them by claiming they were being taken to the Election Commission office, only to detain them at a police station until 2:10 PM. 

TMC's Rajya Sabha leader, Derek O'Brien, who was also detained, outlined four key issues they intended to raise with the Election Commission:

1. Initiating an FIR against former Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for alleged manipulation of the voters' list.

2. Implementing digitization of the voters' list.

3. Halting the current SIR process, particularly in opposition-ruled states.

4. Preventing the sharing of BLA-2 (voter agent) details with the Election Commission, citing concerns over potential misuse by the BJP. 

The TMC has criticized the Election Commission's actions, suggesting that the BJP's sole defense of the EC indicates a lack of independence of the constitutional body. 

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh condemned the police action as undemocratic and likened it to fascist tactics aimed at suppressing dissent. 

The incident has intensified the ongoing debate over the fairness and transparency of the electoral process, with opposition parties alleging that the current revision of the voters' list is being manipulated to favor the ruling party. The opposition's call for an independent investigation into the matter remains unaddressed, leading to further protests and demands for accountability. 

The detention of elected representatives and the subsequent health incidents have raised concerns about the treatment of opposition members and the state of democracy in the country. The opposition parties are planning to escalate their protests and have vowed to continue their fight for electoral reforms and the protection of democratic institutions.
