IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 3: Only a handful of shops remain open at Jadavpur Station. Due to ongoing overnight protests aimed at preventing eviction drives, most vendors have decided not to open their shops.
Only a few food stalls and other small outlets are functioning. Among them is a shop run by Gopalchandra Ghosh, located under the roots of a tree on the station premises. He has also reportedly received an eviction notice. He stated that his shop has been operating since 1990 and that he is the sole earning member of his family. He expressed deep anxiety about his future income and livelihood.
Concerns over hawker evictions led to protests on Tuesday night at Jadavpur Station, with Left party leaders and workers joining the demonstration. Protesters alleged that bulldozers were stationed near the station and that shops could be demolished at any moment, prompting the agitation. On Wednesday morning, it was observed that most shops at Jadavpur Station remained closed.
