
IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 23: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning as part of his India visit. Rubio landed at Kolkata airport along with his wife and immediately proceeded to Mother House in Taltala, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa.
Marco Rubio spent nearly an hour at the Mother House, where he paid tribute and interacted with members of the organisation. After completing his visit there, Rubio went to Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, a well-known child care institution run by the Missionaries of Charity.
The visit of the US Secretary of State to these iconic institutions in Kolkata has drawn significant attention, especially considering the symbolic importance of Mother House and its humanitarian legacy. Security arrangements in and around the areas were tightened ahead of Rubio’s arrival.
Marco Rubio is scheduled to leave for New Delhi, where he is expected to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting is likely to focus on bilateral relations, strategic cooperation, and regional issues.
Rubio will participate in the upcoming Quad meeting on May 26, which is considered one of the major objectives of his India visit. The Quad meeting will also be attended by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
The Quad alliance, comprising India, the United States, Australia, and Japan, is expected to discuss important regional and global issues during the upcoming meeting. Rubio’s visit to India is being viewed as a significant diplomatic engagement amid evolving geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific region.
