IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, March 17: With the election bugle sounding in West Bengal after the Election Commission announced the polling schedule on Sunday, the Left Front on Monday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. The announcement marked the formal beginning of the alliance’s electoral preparations as it seeks to regain political ground in the state.

The list was unveiled at a press conference in Kolkata by Left Front chairman Biman Bose, who revealed the names of 192 candidates who will contest in the first phase of the party’s campaign. The announcement followed a series of discussions among the alliance partners regarding seat-sharing arrangements, which, according to the leadership, concluded on a positive note.

Among the prominent candidates announced in the first list are senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, who will contest from Jadavpur, and youth leader Minakshi Mukherjee, who has been nominated from Uttarpara. Several other well-known party leaders, including Kallol Dasgupta, have also been fielded in key constituencies as the party attempts to strengthen its electoral presence.

The first list has also generated significant political interest because the names of several prominent leaders are absent. Notably missing from the list are CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim, veteran leader Sujan Chakraborty and youth leader Srijan Bhattacharyya. Their absence has triggered speculation about whether they will contest in the elections at all or whether their names will appear in the next phase of candidate announcements. The party leadership, however, did not provide any clear indication regarding their possible candidature.

Another notable development is that young CPI(M) leader Shatarup Ghosh will not contest the upcoming Assembly elections. Party sources indicated that the decision was taken as part of a broader strategic approach aimed at balancing experienced leaders with emerging political faces across different constituencies.

The Left Front leadership also highlighted that discussions with alliance partners had progressed smoothly this time, allowing for a more coordinated seat-sharing arrangement. In previous elections, negotiations over seats had occasionally created tensions among the alliance partners, especially when the CPI(M), as the largest party in the alliance, contested a majority of constituencies. This time, however, the leadership said the discussions were conducted in a cooperative spirit and resulted in an agreement that satisfied most partners.

The alliance has also confirmed its electoral understanding with the Indian Secular Front led by Nawsad Siddique. Although it has already been decided that the party will be allocated several seats, the exact number of constituencies to be contested by the Indian Secular Front has not yet been officially disclosed.

During the press conference held at Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan, the headquarters of the Left Front in Kolkata, Bose emphasized that the alliance had taken special care to ensure fair seat allocation among its partners. In a notable shift from earlier practices, the CPI(M) has reportedly left several constituencies in North Bengal for its allies to contest, reflecting what leaders described as a more inclusive approach within the alliance.

The Left Front leadership expressed confidence that the candidate selection process reflects both political experience and grassroots representation. According to party leaders, many of the candidates have long-standing involvement in social movements, workers’ struggles and grassroots political activities across West Bengal.

The political atmosphere in the state intensifies ahead of the Assembly elections, the Left Front’s announcement of its first list of candidates signals the beginning of a major campaign effort by the alliance. With more names expected to be announced in the coming days, the Left Front aims to present a strong challenge in what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral contest in West Bengal.
