IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Washington, June 5: US President Donald Trump has delivered an important message regarding the proposed trade agreement between India and the United States. Once again referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his “friend,” Trump expressed confidence that a trade deal between the two countries would be reached in the near future. His remarks come at a time when economic ties between Washington and New Delhi continue to attract significant global attention.
Trade relations with India, Trump said that for many years India had taken advantage of the United States by imposing high tariffs on American goods while contributing little in return. He claimed that the situation had now changed and that the United States was benefiting significantly from its economic engagement with India.
“Over the years, India took advantage of the United States. They imposed massive tariffs on us and paid nothing. Now the situation is completely different, and we are making a lot of money from India. But we will reach a deal because I like your Prime Minister very much. He is a good friend of mine, and we share an excellent relationship. We have a very good rapport,” Trump said while highlighting his personal and diplomatic relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The US President’s remarks are being viewed as a positive signal for the ongoing negotiations between the two nations, which have been attempting to strengthen economic cooperation through a comprehensive trade arrangement. A successful agreement could further expand bilateral trade and investment opportunities while deepening strategic ties between the world's largest and oldest democracies.
Trump also addressed a separate issue concerning recent developments in the US Congress regarding Iran. A proposal seeking restrictions on military action and the withdrawal of forces involved in operations against Iran was introduced in the House of Representatives. The measure received support not only from opposition Democrats but also from four Republican lawmakers.
Trump dismissed the congressional vote as meaningless and sharply criticized the four members of his own party who supported the proposal. He suggested that their actions were contrary to the national interest and accused them of undermining the country's position on security matters.
The same time, the US President maintained a firm stance on Iran and reiterated his warning regarding any threat to American personnel. Trump stated that if even a single American soldier were to lose his life at the hands of Iran, military action could resume immediately. He further argued that such a response would be fully justified under the circumstances.
The comments reflect Trump's continued emphasis on both strengthening international trade partnerships and maintaining a hardline approach toward national security issues. His statements on India indicate optimism about future economic cooperation, while his remarks on Iran underscore Washington’s willingness to respond forcefully to any perceived threat against American interests.
