IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Bhubaneswar: The short holiday for Bengalis often means heading towards Digha, Puri or Darjeeling. For many, the number of times they have visited Puri over the years may be difficult to count. But this Puja holiday, travellers can consider making their trip a little different. Before heading to the Jagannath Temple for darshan, why not spend a night amid forests and nature? If luck is on your side, you may even get an opportunity to spot wild elephants during a safari.

The destination in question is Chandaka-Dampara, located around 20 kilometres from Bhubaneswar. The forest is known as an elephant habitat and also offers visitors the opportunity to spot a variety of birds. Within the sanctuary is the Deras Dam, which can be explored between 10 am and 5 pm.

Visitors can also opt for a jeep safari through the forest. A jeep safari from Deras to Godibari generally takes around one to two hours, offering an opportunity to experience the forest landscape more closely. Those who prefer exploring on foot can also go hiking through the forest and make their way towards the dam.

Cycling is another option for visitors. Instead of taking a jeep, travellers can rent bicycles and explore the area around the dam at their own pace. Riding along the reservoir surrounded by greenery can offer a peaceful experience away from the usual tourist crowds. Visitors can also climb up the watchtower to enjoy a wider view of the surrounding forest and landscape.

For travellers from Kolkata, reaching Chandaka-Dampara is also relatively convenient. One option is to take a train from Howrah to Bhubaneswar or Cuttack and then hire a vehicle to reach the forest area. Those travelling by road can drive from Kolkata towards Bhubaneswar via Jaleswar and Bhadrak before continuing towards Chandaka.

For those looking to stay overnight, there are two nature camps in the area, located at Deras and Godibari. Travellers can choose to spend the night at one of these camps and continue their journey towards Puri the following day.

For anyone planning a Puja getaway, Chandaka-Dampara can therefore offer a different experience from the usual Puri itinerary. A combination of forest, wildlife, a reservoir, safari, cycling and an overnight stay in nature could turn a short Puja break into a memorable trip before continuing towards the famous pilgrimage destination of Puri.
