IIE DIGITAL DESK : Solo travel among women is gaining momentum, with more women choosing to explore on their own terms, without compromising their desires or waiting for companions. While international destinations like Bali, Georgia, Vietnam, and Thailand are popular globally, India is witnessing a surge in female solo travelers visiting places such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Pondicherry. Alongside the joy of solo journeys, there is also a growing awareness of responsibility and safety, with social media flooded with tips, experiences, and encouragement for women to step out fearlessly.

For first-time travelers from Kolkata, three nearby destinations are recommended. The Futiyari Dam, located near the Tilabani hills in Purulia, offers a scenic reservoir surrounded by Sindurpur-style hills. With sprawling blue waters, green hills, and tranquil surroundings, the area is perfect for a two-day solo retreat. The dam and surrounding hills have also served as backdrops for several Bengali films. Travelers can explore nearby Muruguma Reservoir and Jaychandi Hills, or visit local tribal villages for a cultural experience.

To reach Futiyari Dam, one can take a train to Purulia Junction, followed by a 25-kilometer drive to the dam, which takes roughly an hour. Accommodation is available near the dam for those wishing to stay close to nature.

Another destination is Kafergaon, nestled in the hills of North Bengal. This region, including areas like Kalimpong, is popular among solo travelers, offering hilltop homestays and the warmth of local hospitality. Surrounded by pine forests and misty landscapes, travelers can enjoy serene views of the Kanchenjunga peaks when clouds part.

Travel to Kafergaon involves taking a bus to Siliguri or a train to New Jalpaiguri, followed by a car journey. For a more budget-friendly option, shared vehicles from Siliguri’s Panitanki Mor provide access to Kalimpong, with local transport covering the final leg to hill homestays in approximately two hours. Accommodation options include hotels and wooden homestays, ideal for solitary reflection amidst nature.

A third option is Murshidabad, the historic city once ruled by nawabs. Attractions include Hazarduari, Bara Imambara, Jahan Kosha Cannon, Moti Jhil, as well as temples, royal houses of trading communities, terracotta temples, and Jain temples. Murshidabad is also renowned for its silk trade, offering a mix of heritage, culture, and shopping. Travelers can access Murshidabad via train to Murshidabad Station, or begin their journey from nearby towns such as Baharampur or Azimganj, depending on the areas they wish to explore. A range of hotels is available, catering to varying budgets.

These three destinations—Futiyari Dam, Kafergaon, and Murshidabad—offer women travelers the opportunity to begin their solo journeys safely, comfortably, and meaningfully, combining natural beauty, cultural heritage, and self-reflection.
