IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, Friday: West Bengal’s political landscape, Suvendu Adhikari has been elected as the Chief Minister of the state, becoming the face of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in Bengal. The announcement was made after a crucial legislative party meeting at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally declared Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party and the next Chief Minister. Shah stated that no other name had been proposed for the post, underlining the unanimous support Adhikari enjoys within the party ranks.
The moment carried visible emotion as Suvendu Adhikari, upon hearing his name officially declared, appeared overwhelmed. Standing beside Amit Shah, he expressed gratitude and acknowledged the trust reposed in him by the party’s central leadership. His elevation comes as what many political observers are calling the biggest political reward following a fiercely fought election in which he not only secured decisive victories from Nandigram and Bhabanipur but also defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a high-stakes contest that reshaped Bengal’s political narrative.
Adhikari’s rise to the top post marks a significant chapter in West Bengal’s history. Once considered a close associate and trusted lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee, he parted ways with the Trinamool Congress in 2020 and joined the BJP in the presence of Amit Shah. Since then, he has remained at the forefront of the BJP’s organizational and electoral battles in the state. From revitalizing grassroots workers to coordinating closely with the party’s central command in New Delhi, Adhikari has been instrumental in strengthening the BJP’s footprint across Bengal.
The BJP’s resounding victory, securing 207 seats and crossing the two-thirds majority mark in the Assembly, has given the party a commanding mandate to govern. The scale of the win has stunned many political analysts, especially considering Bengal’s long-standing resistance to the BJP’s expansion. With this mandate, the party has firmly established itself as the dominant political force in the state, ending years of Trinamool Congress rule.
Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal at a grand ceremony scheduled at Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday morning. The event is expected to witness the presence of top BJP leaders and a massive gathering of supporters. The new government will also have two Deputy Chief Ministers, although their names are yet to be officially announced.
The legislative party meeting, Adhikari and other victorious BJP MLAs are expected to proceed to Raj Bhavan to formally stake claim to form the government. The final procedural step will involve receiving the Governor’s approval, after which the swearing-in ceremony will formally usher in the new administration.
Political observers describe this development as more than just a change in leadership; it represents a transformative moment in Bengal’s political journey. The defeat of Mamata Banerjee, a towering figure who dominated the state’s politics for over a decade, has added symbolic weight to Adhikari’s elevation. For the BJP, it is a culmination of years of strategic groundwork and persistent campaigning. For Suvendu Adhikari, it is the pinnacle of a political career defined by ambition, resilience, and calculated risk.
Bengal prepares for a new era under BJP rule, all eyes will now be on how the incoming Chief Minister navigates governance, fulfills electoral promises, and manages the expectations that come with such a sweeping mandate. The political script of West Bengal has undeniably been rewritten, and Suvendu Adhikari now stands at the center of that historic transition.
