IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kathmandu, September 23: The impact of a depression over the Bay of Bengal has begun to be felt in Nepal, raising the possibility of increased rainfall across several parts of the country. The weather system, combined with the prevailing monsoon conditions, is bringing rain to different regions, with Kathmandu likely to witness intermittent showers through the day.
Meteorologist David Dhakal said the system’s partial influence has started extending from Bagmati Province towards eastern Nepal. However, no significant impact has so far been observed in Gandaki Province. According to Dhakal, the ongoing rainfall is being triggered by the combined influence of the depression and the monsoon system.
Bagmati Province is expected to receive rainfall throughout Wednesday, although the possibility of continuous rain remains low. In Kathmandu, intermittent showers are likely to continue during the day, while the chances of sunshine remain limited. The capital has remained largely cloudy since the morning, with weather conditions expected to stay unsettled.
Dhakal said the depression has now intensified into a deep depression and is gradually moving towards land. The system is expected to make landfall by Wednesday evening or Thursday, potentially influencing weather conditions across Nepal in the coming days.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that rainfall could increase further in the days ahead. Compared with Wednesday, heavier rainfall is expected on Thursday and Friday in several areas.
The weather department has also warned of the possibility of heavy snowfall in the high mountains and Himalayan regions during this period. With the mountaineering season currently underway, authorities have already issued a red alert, highlighting the potential risks posed by deteriorating weather conditions in high-altitude areas.
The combination of the deep depression and active monsoon conditions is therefore expected to keep weather conditions unsettled across Nepal, particularly in Bagmati Province, eastern regions and the Himalayan belt.
