Census begins across the state: Digital data can be submitted from August 1 to 15.
IIE DIGITAL DESK ; August 1: The long-awaited 16th Census officially commenced across West Bengal on Saturday, marking the beginning of a statewide data collection exercise that is being conducted entirely through a 100 percent digital platform. The initiative is aimed at improving the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of data collection in line with the government's vision of promoting Digital India and modernizing administrative processes.
Speaking at a programme held to mark the launch of the census process, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari urged people across the state to remain aware of the exercise and participate voluntarily. Addressing the gathering, he said that the 16th Census had formally begun in West Bengal and emphasized that this year's enumeration is being carried out entirely through digital means.
The Chief Minister stated that residents of the state will be able to submit the required personal and family information through the designated digital portal between August 1 and August 15. He encouraged citizens to actively cooperate with the process by completing the online self-enumeration within the specified period.
The state government, the digital census platform has been designed to enable people to complete the self-enumeration process conveniently from their homes using online facilities. Citizens can upload the required demographic and household details on the official portal without the need to visit any government office during the initial phase of the exercise.
Officials explained that the first phase of the census will focus on online self-submission of information over the 15-day period. Once this phase is completed, the second stage of the census will begin, during which authorised government representatives will conduct field verification to confirm the accuracy of the information submitted digitally.
The government believes that adopting a fully digital approach will help streamline the census process, reduce paperwork, improve data accuracy, and ensure faster compilation of demographic information. The initiative is also expected to enhance transparency while making participation easier and more convenient for citizens across urban and rural areas.
Authorities have appealed to residents to provide accurate and complete information during the self-enumeration process so that the census database can effectively support future policy planning, welfare programmes, infrastructure development, and public service delivery. Officials also assured that necessary arrangements have been made to facilitate smooth implementation of the digital census throughout the state.
With the launch of the digital census, West Bengal has entered a new phase of technology-driven governance, as the administration seeks to leverage digital platforms for one of the country's most significant population data collection exercises. Citizens have until August 15 to submit their information online before the verification stage begins.
