IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Census 2027 Self Enumeration: India’s 2027 Census process is entering a new technological era with the introduction of a digital self-enumeration facility. To make the process of data collection easier, faster, and more transparent, the Central Government has launched the ‘Self-Enumeration’ system, allowing citizens to submit their household details online from the comfort of their homes without waiting for a census official to visit.

The online portal for self-enumeration will remain open for a limited period of two weeks, from August 1 to August 15, 2026. During this period, citizens across the country will have the opportunity to complete their census-related information submission digitally.

Although the traditional door-to-door data collection system will continue, the online portal has been introduced as a faster and paperless alternative for citizens. People can complete the entire process using their smartphones or computers in approximately 15 to 20 minutes, making participation more convenient and accessible.

Keeping in mind the linguistic diversity of India, the official website (se.census.gov.in) and the mobile application have been developed in English, Hindi, and 14 regional languages so that people from different parts of the country can easily understand and use the platform.

To begin the self-enumeration process, citizens first need to access the portal or mobile application and select their respective state. After this, verification will be completed through an OTP sent to the registered mobile number of the head of the family. Users will need to provide the name of the family head and mobile number for authentication.

After successful verification, citizens will have to enter their complete residential address and mark the exact location of their house using the location pin facility available on the integrated digital map. This will help authorities accurately identify residential locations during the census process.

The self-enumeration form will require citizens to provide information related to their house structure, construction materials used, source of drinking water, electricity connection, cooking gas or fuel availability, and drainage facilities. These details will help in understanding housing conditions and living standards across the country.

Citizens will also have to provide details regarding household assets and electronic items available with the family. Information about items such as televisions, mobile phones, laptops, bicycles, motorcycles, and four-wheelers will be collected as part of the census data.

As part of the household information, citizens will be required to select the main food grain regularly consumed by their family. Options include rice, wheat, jowar, bajra, or maize, allowing the government to understand food consumption patterns across different regions.

After completing all sections of the form, citizens will be able to review the information provided and complete the profiles of all family members. Once everything is verified, users can click on the ‘Submit’ button to complete the process. Citizens will also have the option to save the information as a draft before final submission.

After successful submission of the online information, a unique ‘Self-Enumeration ID’ (SE ID) will be sent to the registered mobile number and email address of the citizen.

However, submitting information online does not mean that the visit of government census officials will be cancelled. During the later stage, when census workers visit households for verification, citizens will only need to show their SE ID. Officials will scan the ID and quickly verify the information already submitted online, saving valuable time for both citizens and census workers.

The government has appealed to citizens across all states and Union Territories to make use of this modern digital facility within the scheduled period of August 1 to August 15 and provide accurate information for the successful completion of the Census 2027 process.

The introduction of self-enumeration is expected to bring greater efficiency, transparency, and convenience to one of India’s largest data collection exercises, marking a significant step towards technology-driven governance.
