IIE DIGITAL: With autumn just around the corner, the festive season is all set to bring along long holidays and a much-needed break from daily routines. While many people plan trips to distant destinations during Puja, those looking for a quick getaway close to the city can explore Jharokhali, a serene corner of the Sundarbans that promises tranquillity, nature and a refreshing experience away from the urban chaos.

Located in the Basanti block of South 24 Parganas, Jharokhali Eco Tourism has emerged as a perfect destination for travellers seeking peace amid nature. Surrounded by mangrove forests and greenery, this quiet retreat offers a chance to spend a few days away from the noise and rush of city life. Though the forests here may not be as dense as other parts of the Sundarbans, the charm of the landscape and the presence of rich biodiversity make Jharokhali an attractive destination for nature lovers.

One of the biggest attractions here is the famous Tiger Rescue Centre, spread across nearly three acres. Injured tigers rescued from conflicts in the wild are brought here for treatment and care. Veterinary experts from Kolkata provide medical assistance, and once the animals recover, they are released back into their natural habitat. The centre remains open for visitors six days a week, except Monday, from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Visitors can observe the majestic animals from a safe distance by purchasing an entry ticket.

Apart from tigers, the surrounding area also offers glimpses of other wildlife. A small waterbody near the tiger enclosure occasionally attracts crocodiles, while monkeys and spotted deer can also be seen in the region. Covered with various species of trees and plants, the area remains cool and peaceful even during sunny days, creating a refreshing atmosphere for visitors.

A short walk from the Tiger Rescue Centre leads to the Jharokhali SDB Jetty, another highlight of the destination. Standing between the Matla and Bidyadhari rivers, the jetty offers a breathtaking view, especially during sunset. The golden reflections on the flowing waters, the cool breeze and the surrounding wilderness create a picture-perfect setting that instantly calms the mind.

From the jetty, visitors can hire boats or launches to explore the vast landscapes of the Sundarbans. A morning journey is recommended for those planning a river safari, as the experience of cruising through waterways surrounded by mangrove forests is unforgettable. Some parts of the forest remain restricted areas where only forest officials are allowed entry, but tourists can still enjoy the beauty of the untouched surroundings. The region attracts numerous local and migratory birds, and lucky visitors may even spot wildlife moving along the distant forest edges.

A trip to Jharokhali remains incomplete without experiencing the beauty of the Sundarbans’ rivers and the meeting point of land and water. Taking time to explore the surroundings without rushing can make the journey even more memorable.

Jharokhali is easily accessible from Kolkata. Travellers can reach the destination by road in around three hours. Another option is to take a local train from Sealdah South section to Canning and then continue the journey by bus or local transport. From Canning station, Jharokhali market is about an hour away.

For accommodation, travellers can stay at eco-friendly resorts located near the Tiger Rescue Centre. One such riverside stay offers cottages built over water, providing visitors with a unique experience close to nature. The resort also arranges cultural programmes like Baul performances and Bonbibi pala in the evenings, adding a traditional touch to the holiday.

The cost of staying in Jharokhali varies depending on the type of accommodation. Basic rooms generally start from around Rs 3,000 per night, while air-conditioned rooms are available at a slightly higher price. Additional charges may apply for extra guests.

Food is another highlight of the stay, with options ranging from local fish and meat dishes to eggs, vegetarian meals and Chinese cuisine. The simple, homestyle flavours make the dining experience even more enjoyable after a day spent exploring the forests and rivers.

For those wanting to avoid crowded Puja destinations and spend the holidays surrounded by greenery, wildlife and peaceful river views, Jharokhali can be an ideal short trip from Kolkata.
