IIE DIGITAL DESK  : India’s historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory has put head coach Gautam Gambhir in the spotlight for steering the team to a third world title — making the nation proud with a dominant win over New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Under his guidance, India became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title successfully and lift it three times overall, including 2007 and 2024.

Gambhir spoke candidly about the tough periods he faced during his tenure as head coach — especially after India suffered home Test series defeats against teams like New Zealand and South Africa — moments that drew criticism and pressure on him. He revealed that very few people reached out to him during those low points, but one figure stood out: ICC Chairman Jay Shah, who called him with words of encouragement when he needed support most.

Gambhir recounted that after India’s heartbreaking loss to New Zealand in Mumbai, he was at the airport when Shah called him early in the morning, urging him not to lose confidence and to stay strong. He later received another call from Shah after the defeat to South Africa. Those gestures, he said, meant a great deal to him and helped him push through the difficult phase.

The coach also expressed heartfelt gratitude toward key cricketing figures who played a role in shaping Indian cricket’s success in recent years, including former coach Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar. While dedicating the title to the entire team and the Indian public, Gambhir singled out these individuals for their contribution and belief in his leadership.

Gambhir’s journey from facing criticism to leading India to one of the most commanding victories in World Cup history — a 96‑run win in the final — highlights both his resilience and his coaching philosophy. He emphasized prioritizing collective success over individual milestones, a stance he reinforced after the final, stating that winning trophies matters more than personal records

India’s cricket fraternity and fans have celebrated the team’s success, recognizing the blend of courage, strategy and teamwork that brought this trophy home. As Gambhir continues to build on India’s white‑ball success, his reflections on personal struggle and support paint a deeper picture of the journey behind the celebrations.
