IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, March 18: The Chaitra season unfolds, residents of West Bengal can expect a mix of muggy heat and intermittent showers, with the possibility of localized thunderstorms, according to the Alipore Meteorological Department. The city of Kolkata woke up on Wednesday to partially cloudy skies, bringing a sense of relief from the intense sunshine but maintaining a humid and uncomfortable atmosphere.

Alipore officials reported that Kolkata’s minimum temperature today stands at 24.2°C, slightly above normal, while the maximum is expected to reach 30.6°C, lower than the seasonal average. The combination of lingering humidity and warm temperatures will make the day feel sticky, though brief showers may offer some respite.

Looking ahead, meteorologists have issued forecasts indicating that the intensity of rain and thunderstorms will increase by Friday and Saturday, with the highest rainfall likely on Saturday. Residents are advised to carry umbrellas or rain gear if venturing outdoors during the weekend.

Southern districts of Bengal will also witness enhanced rainfall, with areas such as Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, and the two Bardhaman districts facing strong winds and hail along with heavy showers. Thunderstorm activity is expected in other southern districts as well, creating potentially disruptive conditions for commuters and outdoor activities.

Northern Bengal will continue to experience bouts of rain, with Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri seeing intermittent thunderstorms accompanied by heavy showers. The Alipore Meteorological Department has specifically highlighted Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar as districts with a high likelihood of intense rainfall. Hilly regions will not only face showers and hail but also strong gusts of wind, raising concerns for local transportation and outdoor safety.

The seasonal weather pattern indicates that the state is entering a phase of Chaitra storms, or “Kalbaisakhi,” which typically bring short-lived but intense rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds. Citizens are advised to remain cautious and stay updated with local weather alerts as the weekend approaches.

With temperatures fluctuating and thunderstorms on the horizon, Bengal’s Chaitra season continues to deliver a mix of heat, humidity, and sudden rain, affecting daily routines and outdoor plans while adding a dynamic twist to the late-March weather.
