IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata | June 22, 2026 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a sweeping victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections and Shubhendu Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister in early May, the newly formed government on Monday presented its first full-fledged and historic budget in the State Assembly. Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta unveiled the 2026-27 state budget with several major announcements focusing on government employees, women’s welfare, employment generation, and rural development.

One of the biggest highlights of the budget was the mega announcement of a 20 percent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees. The decision is being viewed as a significant move by the Shubhendu-led government to address the long-standing dissatisfaction among government employees who had been protesting for a higher DA. With this latest increase, the total DA for state government employees has reached 38 percent, providing substantial financial relief to thousands of employees and pensioners across the state.

The budget also introduced a massive financial package for social welfare schemes and the development of rural infrastructure. The BJP government had promised to replace the previous administration’s Lakshmir Bhandar scheme with the Annapurna Yojana, and to ensure the successful implementation of this ambitious welfare programme, Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta announced an enormous allocation of ₹36,000 crore in the budget. Through the Annapurna Yojana, eligible women are expected to receive greater direct financial assistance compared to the benefits available under the earlier scheme.

The rural economy and transforming the overall structure of villages, the government allocated ₹14,000 crore for the special GRAMG project. The scheme has been designed to boost rural employment opportunities, improve infrastructure, and accelerate economic growth in villages across West Bengal.

The challenge of managing a significant debt burden inherited by the state, the new government has chosen to make record allocations towards employment, DA enhancement, women’s welfare, and rural development in its first complete budget. The ruling camp has claimed that these landmark decisions will pave the way for achieving the vision of a “Viksit Bangla” by creating stronger economic foundations, improving living standards, and expanding development opportunities throughout the state.

The 2026-27 West Bengal Budget has therefore emerged as a crucial policy roadmap for the new government, combining financial relief for employees, increased social security for women, and a strong focus on revitalising the rural economy. The implementation and effectiveness of these ambitious schemes will now be closely watched by citizens, economists, and political observers in the coming months.
