Monsoon Arrives in North Bengal Bringing Heavy Rainfall, Rain Forecast for South Bengal as Well

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 10: The southwest monsoon has officially advanced into several districts of North Bengal, bringing widespread rainfall and offering relief from the intense summer heat. According to the latest weather forecasts, heavy rainfall is likely in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri over the next few days as monsoon activity strengthens across the region.

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the monsoon is gradually progressing through eastern India, and weather conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for rainfall across both North and South Bengal. While North Bengal is expected to witness significant rainfall, several districts in South Bengal are also likely to experience rain and thunderstorms within the next 24 hours.

Meteorologists have forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour in Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts. In view of the expected weather conditions, an Orange Alert has been issued for these districts, warning residents of possible disruptions caused by thunderstorms and strong winds.

The remaining districts of South Bengal are also likely to receive scattered light rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour may occur in several areas, according to the weather office. The changing weather pattern is expected to provide some relief from the prevailing heat and humidity in many parts of the region.

The arrival of rain-bearing clouds, uncomfortable weather conditions are expected to persist in some western districts of South Bengal. The meteorological department has issued a Yellow Alert for Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, and Paschim Bardhaman due to hot and humid conditions that may continue during the day.

Kolkata, residents woke up to a warm and humid morning on Wednesday. The minimum temperature recorded in the city was 29.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.4 degrees above the seasonal average. High humidity levels have added to the discomfort, although weather officials expect cloud cover and scattered showers to bring some respite in the coming days.

The monsoon steadily advancing across the state, authorities are closely monitoring weather developments, particularly in districts vulnerable to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and localized waterlogging. The arrival of the monsoon is expected to benefit agriculture and replenish water resources, even as residents are advised to remain alert to weather advisories issued by the administration.
