IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, August 5: The massive fire broke out at a warehouse storing plastic sheets on Pandit Purushottam Roy Street in Kolkata’s Burrabazar area in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering panic among local residents and shopkeepers. The incident took place at around 4 am when residents noticed flames and thick smoke emerging from the warehouse and immediately alerted the fire department.

Soon after receiving the information, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot with eight fire engines. As the warehouse contained a large quantity of plastic sheets and other plastic materials, the flames reportedly spread rapidly, making the firefighting operation particularly challenging. The highly inflammable nature of the stored materials created an additional risk and forced the firefighters to work carefully to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby shops, commercial establishments and residential buildings.

Firefighters launched an intensive operation to bring the situation under control. For several hours, water was continuously sprayed on the burning warehouse as the fire personnel attempted to contain the flames and prevent further escalation. After nearly four hours of sustained efforts, the fire was brought under control at around 8 am.

Police personnel also reached the spot soon after the incident was reported. Security and precautionary measures were taken in the area to ensure that the fire did not spread to adjoining shops and houses. Given the densely populated and commercially busy nature of Burrabazar, the incident caused considerable concern among local residents and traders.

The thick smoke and flames emerging from the warehouse created an atmosphere of fear in the locality during the early morning hours. Residents and nearby shopkeepers gathered in the area as the firefighting operation continued. The presence of a substantial quantity of plastic materials inside the warehouse made the situation more complicated for the fire brigade personnel.

Although the fire has been brought under control, the exact cause of the incident has not yet been established. Fire department officials have, however, initially suspected that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze. Investigations are underway to determine whether an electrical fault or any other factor was responsible for the outbreak.

The extent of damage caused by the fire is also yet to be ascertained. Officials are expected to assess the condition of the warehouse and calculate the value of the materials and property damaged once the site has been thoroughly inspected. Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.

The fire once again highlights the challenges faced by emergency services while dealing with warehouses containing highly combustible materials in densely populated commercial areas. In Burrabazar, where warehouses, shops and residential structures often operate in close proximity, even a relatively contained fire can pose a serious threat to surrounding properties.

Fire officials continued their inspection of the affected premises after the flames were brought under control to ensure that there was no possibility of the fire reigniting. Authorities are also expected to examine whether adequate fire-safety arrangements were in place at the warehouse.

No further details regarding casualties or injuries were immediately available. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, while a detailed assessment of the damage is expected to provide a clearer picture of the losses caused by the devastating fire.
