Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, born on June 29, 1864, and passing away on May 25, 1924, was one of Bengal’s most distinguished personalities. He was a renowned educationist, mathematician, judge of the Calcutta High Court, and also served as the Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta.
He earned the title “Banglar Bagh” or “Tiger of Bengal” because of his fearless personality, uncompromising attitude, and remarkable contributions to education and society. Sir Ashutosh played a crucial role in the Bengal Renaissance movement and was widely respected for strengthening higher education and academic excellence in Bengal.
Apart from his contributions to law and education, he was also an eminent mathematician whose work and vision influenced generations of scholars and students across the country. In recognition of his services, the British government honoured him with the title of Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE).
Mamata Banerjee’s tribute once again highlighted the enduring legacy of Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee and his lasting impact on Bengal’s intellectual and cultural history.
