IIE DIGITAL DESK : August 28, Kolkata’s Mayo Road came alive as the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)—the student wing of the Trinamool Congress—marked its Foundation Day with a powerful and unifying rally led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Addressing a massive gathering of students, youth, and party workers, Mamata Banerjee delivered a clarion call to uphold principles, urging the TMCP cadre to “never compromise with injustice,” to carry themselves with dignity, and to stand resolutely in the face of wrongdoing. She emphasized that she would always stand by them in their fight for a stronger and more progressive Bengal .
Simultaneously, Abhishek Banerjee echoed the party’s emphasis on youth empowerment and social justice. Taking to social media, he lauded Bengal’s youth for their enduring leadership in driving movements for change and encouraged TMCP members to continue raising their voices and shaping a brighter future. He expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the students’ unwavering commitment and invoked the rallying cry “Joy Bangla” as a call to collective action .
The presence of both Banerjees at the Mayo Road gathering reinforced the TMCP's pivotal role within the broader Trinamool family. Their speeches reaffirmed a joint vision: that the student wing remains integral to the party’s mission of upholding integrity, advancing social justice, and strengthening the state's trajectory toward progress .
This event carries additional significance as the last TMCP Foundation Day before the upcoming state assembly elections. The rally’s timing and tone underscore Trinamool’s strategy to energize its young base and consolidate support across West Bengal .
The celebrations were shadowed by controversy: Calcutta University had refused to reschedule exams for the B.Com and BA LLB fourth semester, which coincided with the rally. TMCP alleged political interference, arguing that the exam schedule disrupted the Foundation Day event and was symptomatic of broader suppression of student participation .
Together, the Condemnation of injustice, emphasis on youth empowerment, and institutional challenges reflect the charged political atmosphere ahead of the polls. For now, what stood out most was the resounding message from both Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee—their solidarity, leadership, and galvanising of a generation ready to defend justice and drive a progressive future.
