Heatwave rages, Kolkata temperature reaches 29 degrees

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, May 19: Residents of Kolkata and several districts across South Bengal are reeling under intense heat and humid weather conditions as temperatures continue to rise steadily across the region. The relentless summer heat, coupled with strong sunshine and high humidity levels, has made outdoor conditions increasingly uncomfortable, especially during the daytime.

The Alipore Meteorological Department, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, which is 2.5 degrees above the seasonal average. The unusually warm start to the day added to the discomfort of city residents, with many areas experiencing oppressive humidity from early morning hours.

Weather officials have warned that the prevailing hot and uncomfortable conditions are likely to intensify further throughout the week across South Bengal. In Kolkata, the maximum temperature is expected to hover between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius over the next few days. Meanwhile, districts in western parts of the state could witness temperatures touching the 40-degree mark, raising concerns over heat-related health issues and public discomfort.

The continuous rise in mercury levels has significantly affected daily life in both urban and rural areas. Roads and marketplaces have appeared relatively less crowded during peak afternoon hours as people attempt to avoid direct exposure to the harsh sun. The soaring temperatures have also led to increased demand for electricity and drinking water across several districts.

Despite the prevailing heatwave-like conditions, the weather department has indicated the possibility of localised thunderstorms and rain activity in various parts of South Bengal. The formation of thunderclouds due to local weather conditions may trigger thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several districts. However, meteorologists believe that these scattered spells of rain are unlikely to bring long-lasting relief from the prevailing heat.

The combination of high temperature and excessive moisture in the atmosphere has created severe discomfort levels, particularly in Kolkata and adjoining districts. Health experts have advised people to remain hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during afternoon hours, and take precautions against heat exhaustion and dehydration.

With the summer heat tightening its grip over the region, residents are now looking towards possible stronger pre-monsoon showers for substantial respite from the sweltering weather conditions.
