IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, May 19: Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s firm stance against illegal constructions across West Bengal, the bulldozer has now targeted two properties belonging to Trinamool Congress All-India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Notices have been issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for his residences in Shantiniketan and Kalighat, and have already been displayed at the properties. The notices demand that any unauthorized constructions be removed immediately, failing which the municipal authorities will carry out demolition themselves.

Shantiniketan, located on Harish Mukherjee Road, is widely recognized as a prominent residence. Abhishek Banerjee resides here with his wife and children. In addition, he owns several other properties, including one at 121 Kalighat Road, registered in the name of his mother, Lata Banerjee. This property has been classified under Lips and Bounds holdings. Both the Shantiniketan and Kalighat properties fall under the municipal scrutiny, specifically the 73rd ward of Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. The notices indicate that certain sections of the structures at these addresses appear to be built without municipal approval, and the owners are required to confirm whether proper permissions were obtained for any additional constructions.

The KMC has clearly instructed that the unauthorized sections must be dismantled within seven days. If Abhishek Banerjee does not act on his own, the municipal corporation will proceed with demolition. On the matter, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim stated that he was unaware of the notices and had not been consulted regarding the municipal action. BJP legislator Tapas Roy commented, suggesting that the mayor’s lack of involvement is unsurprising and that the municipal corporation has acted correctly in issuing the notices.

The latest move underscores the state government’s zero-tolerance approach toward illegal construction, extending even to properties owned by high-profile political figures.
