IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, May 19: Fuel prices have risen once again, just five days after the previous hike, putting significant pressure on everyday consumers. Among major cities across India, Kolkata has witnessed the steepest increase this time. On Tuesday, petrol prices in the city increased by 96 paise per liter, while diesel prices rose by 94 paise per liter. As a result, petrol now costs Rs 109.70 per liter and diesel Rs 96.07 per liter.
The sudden spike in fuel prices has raised concerns among daily commuters, drivers, and transport business owners. Rising transportation costs could lead to higher prices for essential goods in the near future, according to local business representatives. This hike is expected to have a direct impact on the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
Visits to several petrol pumps across Kolkata on Tuesday revealed widespread frustration among the public over the repeated price hikes. Many expressed that managing household budgets has become increasingly difficult due to the recurring increase in fuel prices. Transport workers also fear that passenger fares may rise as a result of higher fuel costs. Regular drivers reported, “Daily commuting has become costly. Frequent hikes in fuel prices are creating additional pressure on ordinary people.”
